- No cold letters. Nobody writes first until you have both said you’d like to.
- Slow is the pace, not the post. Each letter arrives as an ordinary email, right away.
- Leaving is one action. From any letter, and it takes effect within sixty seconds.

How letters work
Every letter is an email, sent through Kindling, an open protocol for finding people. The co-op keeps the Pools, reads the requests, and otherwise stays out of the way.

Say yes to a Pool

A curator writes to you first: who is asking, what the Pool is for, and a Yes and a No the same size. You have 14 days to answer, and a no is remembered. §5.2

Say you’d like to write

Inside a Pool you choose who you’d like to write to, and they choose too. Nobody sends a first letter until you both have. §7.2

Write once a week, at most

Half in the language you’re learning, half in the one you know. Letters travel as email and arrive right away; the slowness is yours to keep. §6.1

Las clases pagan las cartas
Classes pay for the letters
Correo Lento is a small co-op. Our teachers run paid language classes, and the fees pay for everything the letters need: the mail service that carries them, this site, and the hours our curators spend reading requests and answering questions.
The letters are free, and they always will be. Nobody pays to be introduced, nobody pays to write, and you never need a class to join a Pool. Valeria Ortiz teaches our Spanish classes from Oaxaca.

Lo que no somos
What we aren’t
Not a tutoring marketplace
No vendemos clases a través de las cartas.
Nobody is paid to write, and nobody sells lessons through a letter. Your pen pal is a learner like you, not a tutor. Our classes are separate, and you never need one to write.
Not a dating site
No somos un sitio de citas.
The Pools are for letters about language and ordinary life. There are no photos to rate, and nobody is suggested to you. You choose who you’d like to write to, and so do they.
Not a game
No llevamos la cuenta.
No streaks, no badges, no reminders to write. A letter comes when it comes, and a quiet month is fine.
